What Are The Side Effects of Birth Control?

Birth Control Basics

Birth control methods include barrier methods, hormonal methods, sterilization and others.

If avoiding pregnancy is your goal, you have many different birth control methods to choose from. You can go with barrier methods (like condoms), hormonal methods (like the pill or IUD), sterilization (a vasectomy for men or tubal ligation for women), and others. Whichever you pick, be aware of possible side effects.

The birth control pill may cause headaches.

One of the most common methods of contraception is the birth control pill. One side effect that women report with all types of birth control pills is headaches. This can happen with combination birth control pills -- that contain estrogen and progestin -- and the minipill that has only progestin. But not all women get them. Those who do usually have them for 2 to 3 months. Other hormonal methods, like intrauterine devices (IUDs), patches, or injections can bring headaches too.

Hormonal changes that occur when using birth control may trigger nausea.

The hormonal changes common with some birth control methods can bring nausea from time to time. This can happen with options like combination birth control pills, progestin-only birth control pills, the patch, the contraceptive ring, and the so-called morning-after pill that can prevent pregnancy after a birth control method fails or after unprotected sex.

Breast Tenderness

Breast tenderness is a possibility with some types of birth control.

Hormones in various birth control methods show up throughout the body, stopping the release of the egg from the ovaries and causing other bodily changes that help prevent pregnancy. If you use hormonal birth control methods like the pill, the minipill (with progestin only), the patch, or the vaginal ring, breast tenderness is possible. If you feel it, the tenderness usually goes away in 3 to 5 months.

Changes in Your Period

Changes in your period may occur when you use birth control.

One possible side effect from birth control methods you take by mouth (like the pill or the morning-after pill) is a difference in the bleeding during your period. The amount that you bleed could change, you might have breakthrough bleeding or spotting between periods, or you may stop bleeding completely -- either occasionally or for several months in a row. Your doctor can tell you whether what's going on is a normal side effect or something else.

Use of an IUD may cause cramps and backaches for a few days after insertion.

Some women who use IUDs -- they come both in hormonal and nonhormonal versions -- get cramps. They can pair with backaches for a few days after you insert the IUD, but the pain usually goes away once your body gets used to the device. Over-the-counter pain medicine (like ibuprofen or aspirin) can help. If your discomfort continues for more than a few days, check with your doctor to make sure your IUD sits where it should.

Hormonal birth control implants may cause acne as a side effect.

If you choose hormonal implants as your birth control method, a thin rod goes inside the skin of your upper arm. It can stay in place for up to 3 years. It's the most highly effective method of reversible birth control around (less than one pregnancy per 100 women every year). But one possible side effect from a hormonal implant is acne.

Mood Changes

Birth control may be associated with mood changes.

The hormones in a contraceptive ring stop your body from releasing eggs from your ovaries, a process called ovulation. The hormones also thicken mucus in your cervix to keep sperm from reaching the egg. It all can also cause discomfort and discharge, as well as changes in your mood.

Weight Changes

Injectable birth control is most likely to cause weight gain compared to other birth control methods.

You can take hormones for birth control many different ways. Research has shown that most methods won't cause women to gain much weight. The exception is when they take it by injection. Studies suggest that weight and fat can go up significantly with the shot. But once you stop getting the injection, the fat comes off.

Skin Allergies

Skin allergies are one potential symptom of using birth control.

If you're allergic to latex, condoms may cause an allergic reaction. If you use a birth control patch, you might get some irritation around the area where you put it on. The vaginal ring and other methods, like sponges and cervical caps with spermicide (a chemical which neutralizes sperm) can also cause irritation and discomfort.

Smoking and the Pill

Smoking while taking the birth control pill may lead to serious, even life-threatening side effects.

This can be a dangerous combination. If you take a pill with the estrogen in it and you already have certain health problems -- including diabetes, breast cancer, blood-clotting disorders, high blood pressure, some heart or blood vessel problems, and liver or gallbladder disease -- you may be at risk for serious, even life-threatening side effects. If you smoke, your chances of these side effects go up. Talk with your doctor about ways you can quit.

Good Side Effects

Using the pill may decrease the risk of cancer, heavy periods, cramps, iron deficiency anemia, cysts and prevent bone thinning.

Birth control pills with hormones may lower your odds of getting certain types of cancer, including colorectal, endometrial, and ovarian cancers. Pills can ease painful, heavy periods too. They can also calm cramps, reduce cysts in your breasts and ovaries, prevent bone thinning, and help prevent anemia from iron deficiency. They may even help with acne.

(108:3), 2007. 163-66. he research conducted by ancient medical scholars led to some of the most extensive of early medical inquiries. Bujalkova explores what he feels is a fairly serious problem in examining ancient texts and the forms of birth control and contraception that they employed. his problem is that many of the writers of ancient times did not clearly identify the difference between contraceptives and abortive agents. The basic thesis of Riddle's book is that the Ancient world did use contraceptives which were relatively safe and also quite efficient. It is believed that ancient forms of medicine were archaic, dangerous, and the work of uneducated quacks. Obviously, those who are more well-informed know those suppositions to be false. Although the Ancients may not have understood chemical medicine as we know it today, their methods were still useful and effective particularly in the field of gynecology where patients were in desperate need of aid.

Soranus of Ephesus. Soranus' Gynaecology. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins, 1991. This text is a reprint of an ancient textbook which was the first authoritative text about the female human body and how it differentiated from the male. Soranus explains in clear detail, as translated into modern English, exactly how gynecological issues including birth control were dealt with in Ancient Greece. The author also carefully explains the differences between abortion and contraception and how the two terms have been complicated throughout history. The viewpoint of Soranus is that it far better to prevent conception than to abort a fetus after pregnancy and gives several natural methods of birth control including pomegranate peel and dried figs.

People erroneously think of birth control as a modern invention. Soranus' book not only explains birth control methods which were concurrent at the time of his writings, but also explains methods which came before. Women since early 20th century have been trying for legalized birth control since it was found that old and unscientific measures were leading to high death rates among expectant mothers. Margaret Sanger is one well-known name in the field of birth control. Born in 1879, Sanger was 29 and a mother of three when she found her calling. Trained as a public health nurse, Sanger devoted her time and attention to the field of birth control after the tragic incident in which one of her patients lost her life during pregnancy and after literally begging her for the 'secret' of effective birth control. Sanger then actively began advocating legalization of birth control and challenged some federal laws banning distribution of birth control devices and information. She later established her organization, American Birth control League to facilitate legalization of birth control measures.

Women have always sought just one thing: someone to share their worries and concerns with. So when the Children's Bureau of Department of Labor was established in 1912, mothers thronged the bureau with letters, suggestion, calls for help and information etc. This was one place from where they could get help on everything in connection with pregnancy and childbirth and this was definitely a welcome change. Women concerned about anything from doctors' improper training to pregnancy health issues would write to the Bureau and request relevant information. Bureau had pertinent information in form of brochures and guides that would be sent out to anyone needing them. Sheppard-Towner Maternity and Infancy Protection Act of 1920s sanctioned this distribution of information. Such effective programs under the bureau supposedly saved tens of hundreds of children and mothers. Women were glad to know that government was sincerely interested in their problems and concerns and thus approached the bureau with all kinds of issues connected with their health, children and pregnancy.

I will consider taking the pill in the future if I am in a committed relationship and do not want to get pregnant.
