How To Make Paper Dice (with Free Printable!)
How to make paper dice with your kids.
Games are an amazing way for kids to learn. Taking turns, counting, strategy. And an important part of games is dice.
Dice alone are great ways to learn. Counting, number recognition, addition and subtraction. All of the number sense skills come out with dice. Don’t stop with numbers. You can put any symbol that you want on dice.
The problem can be finding dice that have what you need on them. Or finding the dice that you have in the jumble of toys in the playroom.
That doesn’t have to be an issue though. You can print up your own dice and make exactly what you need when you need it.
Here is how to make paper dice at home with a free printable pattern.

We have lots of fun printable roll a dice games here on our site, but realized that you may not have a pair of real dice on hand.
So we came up with a quick and easy solution. Printable dice! Our dice template makes it super easy to grab, print and fold your dice in only a few minutes.
Leaving you lots of time to play your favorite games.
These will come in handy for all sorts of fun printable activities.
We even include a blank dice template so you can create your own custom dice if have something creative in mind.
The Printable Paper Dice Templates
We have six different dice templates so that you can find just the right one for your needs.
We have larger printable dice that measure about 2 inches wide when assembled.

The first one is a printer friendly black and white version.

And since my kids love ALL things rainbows, we created a fun bright colorful template as well.

And if you're feeling extra creative, we have a blank dice printable template so that you can fill the spaces with any type of shapes or designs you like or need.
This one is good for printing on colored paper and adding white punch-out holes or stickers to it. Kids will love creating their own custom dice to play with.
The blank ones are also great for creating your own dice game with, or creating fun math games.

And if you need a smaller printable paper dice template we have these ones, that measure to 1.2-inch cube when assembled.
They're just smaller versions of the three larger templates above.
How to Make Paper Dice
First, grab and print out the dice template. You'll find it at the end of this tutorial.
You'll also need either tape or craft glue to hold the cube shape together.
You can choose from one of the three templates that we provide.
The PDF file will come with all 6 dice in one file. So I suggest when printing, select the actual page number of the one you want and just print that one out.
It'll save you paper and ink.
Then cut the template out around the solid lines. Don't cut through the dotted areas.
You'll end up with a shape like this.

The fold the tabs on the dotted lines one a flat surface to make sure you create a nice sharp fold.
Then start folding the shape up to make a cube. Here's a step by step video to assemble the paper dice from Just the Art Teacher.
For more durable paper dice, I recommend using cardstock to print out your templates. This will make for a sturdier cube shape and they will last much longer.

Printable Paper Dice Sheets

How do you make paper dice?
Making paper dice is pretty easy. You need to make paper dice sheets containing dice squares and fill the blank squares with dots or words or anything you want to apply with the dice. First you need to make a fold and flip the shape over so the decorated side is facing away from you. On paper dice sheets, there are 6 blank squares, in a similar shape like a cross. Make sure you have 4 squares vertically and 2 more squares on the side from the center of cross shapes. Now you can bend up the two added squares glued against other tabs or squares. Then after you can have a shape of paper cube or your own personalized paper dice.
What can you teach using a paper dice?
Dice game is pretty much a simple game to do in the classroom. You only need a handful of dice, pencils and paper. It is commonly used as math games but it is also possible to make a variation of games for each subject using dice for teaching. In English subjects, you can give students or your kids sheets of Roll & Retell. Each dice rolled lets children tell different topics from the stories you have read to them. Do make questions like what is the story about, where does the story take place or how about the character in the story. Another game you can use with paper dice is to Roll and Write a Story. We often find that kids have difficulties in choosing a setting or character or a plot of a story they have to write. This can solve the problem. There you don’t have to be stuck in thinking that learning with paper dice can only be done on math sheets.

What effective game to do with paper dice for preschoolers?
Doing educational games with preschoolers need to be simple yet active so they can understand easily. A proper game using paper dice for that is more educative and suitable for them recommended to start games if they understand dot patterns and they didn’t change. This also helps preschoolers on counting because in a way they always tend to count each dot everytime it rolls. Then you can write numbers 1-6 on pieces of paper and taped to the wall. There goes for each paper dice roll, according to how many dots shown, guiding them where the numbers and totals of dots are the same. It is up to your preference whether to make it an active run activity or they can shout each number attached on the wall. This is the simplest way and effective activity for preschoolers.

A few general ideas on how to use these dice to get you started:
- You can mix a text die with punctuation like '.' '?' 'not' and an image die. Have students make a sentence, negative statement or question with the word that comes up on the image die.
- Make text dice with phonics digraphs, reading rules, and combinations. Have the students roll the dice and give them 2 minutes to write as many words as they can that contain those phonics rules.
- Make dice with numbers and different operators ( + , - , x ) or just use regular dice plus the operator dice for simple math practice.
- Make text dice with set questions or better yet, just the beginning, 'Have you ever ...?' / 'Do you have ...?' / 'Are you going to ...?' and use these as conversation starters and warm up activities.
- Combine the text dice with the printable board games in examples like those above. So instead of using two dice, you would use the content from the dice and content from the board position to practice your target language.
Here's a list of communication games you can play using dice . These can be used for conversational activities or they can be used with the Crisscross Bingo game from MES-English.

The crane is usually the first project that comes to mind when we think of origami! It’s a very traditional paper folding inspiration.
Historically, it was believed that if you folded a thousand origami cranes, your wish would come true. This is why cranes may have become such a strong symbol of origami over the years. If you want to read more about paper cranes you can find more info and a beautiful story over at Family Peace Centre .
Make a start on your thousand cranes with our origami crane tutorial , this project requires a few more steps than the others we’ve mentioned so far, but once you’ve got the hang of it, there’s no stopping you.
4. Origami dragon
Difficulty rating: Intermediate/advanced
If you really want to dive into some more complex folding, try this magical origami dragon . You'll have a lot of steps to follow, but don't be discouraged: they're easy to understand and have helpful pictures too. We’d recommend mastering the origami crane before moving on to this project, that way you can work your way up and not feel too overwhelmed.
Once you’ve practised your origami dragon with plain paper and are feeling more confident, find your most mythical origami paper (we went for a metallic bronze, which looks a bit like dragon scales), and get folding.
5. Origami rabbit
Difficulty rating: Intermediate

Make your own standing origami bunny with our tutorial! This bunny is simply the cutest, and he will rest anywhere you like. We can guarantee he won’t hop away.
This project is a challenging next step for advanced beginners who have a few paper folding projects under their belt. With 17 steps it might feel a bit intimidating, but trust us, it’s easier than it looks!
You’ll just need to decide on your origami paper. You can choose an Easter theme if you are making them for the occasion, or you can keep them simple, like we did, with dark blue paper and display them throughout the year.

This geometric desk tidy looks modern and stylish, but is super cheap and easy to make (no one will ever know!). Not strictly origami, this paper folding tutorial requires a few more tools like scissors and glue. We’ll walk you through step-by-step where these come in, it’s a quick and simple guide, and you’ll be able to whip one up in no time.

10. Book folding

It’s not quite paper folding in the traditional sense of the word, but it looks simply incredible! It makes for a perfectly unusual piece of home decor and is certainly a talking point.

9. Cast a Die (Or Dice)

Our DIY Guide
Before you commence making your dice, you need to find out what you need. There are several materials you require; such as:
A printable dice pattern Glue/ tape Scissors
Print out your pattern. Suppose you want to work out scissor skills with your child. This is an excellent chance for them to help you out. You can print out many copies you require to make the die you love.
Cut along its outside lines
Fold your die along each of the six sides, ensure that it is precisely along these lines.
Using small pieces of your clear tape, ensure you tape every age on another edge to acquire an excellent cube.
Roll your die and examine whether it works efficiently; then, you can immediately play. Your dice might look lopsided, but they can work excellently. If you do not like what you have made, you can create many to find what you love.
Getting More Dice Templates
In the current generation, Google gives you a solution to all your problems. Furthermore, you can quickly and easily get dozens of templates by googling the dice templates. Most of these templates already have numerals or dots, while some are blank. Many people usually prefer going for the blank because it allows them and their loved ones to use anything, especially on the sides. Moreover, it is easy, but it requires you to master many facts.
Additionally, this method guarantees your children a bonus by allowing them to practice using fine motor precision. For example, you can color each side using different colors. Likewise, you need visual motor skills to cut this out, including motor planning plus bilateral coordination, which helps tape and fold it together. However, if you have a 4-year old child, your assistance will be of great help, but if your child finds the six-sides die easy, try and observe if they can construct.
If you do not like the idea of printing, you can opt for another option. Find a box that is not used, tape, scissors, wrapping paper, or a blank construction paper. You need to make sure it features six equal sides and is not weighted in the middle. This means it will function like the non-bias die. It is an excellent idea because it enables your child to practice wrapping like a gift. It works best for most kids.
Playing dice plays a crucial part in gaming since it has a strategy, counting and taking turns. A pair of dice offers you perfect ways to learn. With it, you can quickly learn subtraction, addition, number recognition as well as counting. Apart from using numbers on dice, you can also use symbols that you require on your dice. However, it is not easy to find a dice that contains what you demand on them, but you can consider printing your dice because it allows you to make what you require whenever you need it.
Furthermore, there are multiple types or kinds of dice, such as:
- Standard or ordinary dice, which incorporates dots, or even numbers on every face
- Dice on the Jumanji with pictures on all surfaces
- Dice with yin as well as yang symbols
- A few board games also utilize dice with positive and negative numbers on every surface
- Poker dice featuring King, Queen, and Jack pictures
- Color dice with varying colors on every given surface
Therefore, this article will guide you on how to make your paper dice at home. Bear in mind that this falls under standard and ordinary dice because it features dots or numbers on every given side. In addition, those who do not want to buy usually consider making theirs at home because it is super easy.
With the steps mentioned above, you should not find it difficult to make dice because these steps are straightforward. Remember. Board games are the best way for you to keep your family busy as well as occupied.
