How To Make Paper Dice (with Free Printable!)

How to make paper dice with your kids.

Games are an amazing way for kids to learn. Taking turns, counting, strategy. And an important part of games is dice.

Dice alone are great ways to learn. Counting, number recognition, addition and subtraction. All of the number sense skills come out with dice. Don’t stop with numbers. You can put any symbol that you want on dice.

The problem can be finding dice that have what you need on them. Or finding the dice that you have in the jumble of toys in the playroom.

That doesn’t have to be an issue though. You can print up your own dice and make exactly what you need when you need it.

Here is how to make paper dice at home with a free printable pattern.

Supplies To Make Your Own Dice

Steps to make your own dice, play with your dice, instructions, how to make paper dice.

This is a super easy fix if you need dice with specific markings or just don’t want to buy one.

Step one is to print out the pattern.

If you want to work on scissor skills with your child, this is a great chance for them to help out. Do know that the dice will be easiest to make and will roll best if the lines are cut straight.

You want to cut out the entire pattern.

Write in your numbers or symbols on the six big squares. This is a great chance to let your child color and personalize the dice!

Then fold the dice in on itself on the interior lines. Use the flaps to tape or glue your dice together.

It’s that easy! I will say that an adult will probably need to help with the taping. It can be hard for little hands to hold everything in place. But once that is done you are ready for all the math games you can think of!

(And who knows, maybe it will get your kiddos interested in learning more about origami! )

The Printable Paper Dice Templates

We have six different dice templates so that you can find just the right one for your needs.

We have larger printable dice that measure about 2 inches wide when assembled.

The first one is a printer friendly black and white version.

And since my kids love ALL things rainbows, we created a fun bright colorful template as well.

blank dice template

And if you're feeling extra creative, we have a blank dice printable template so that you can fill the spaces with any type of shapes or designs you like or need.

This one is good for printing on colored paper and adding white punch-out holes or stickers to it. Kids will love creating their own custom dice to play with.

The blank ones are also great for creating your own dice game with, or creating fun math games.

small dice templates

And if you need a smaller printable paper dice template we have these ones, that measure to 1.2-inch cube when assembled.

They're just smaller versions of the three larger templates above.

How to Make Paper Dice

First, grab and print out the dice template. You'll find it at the end of this tutorial.

You'll also need either tape or craft glue to hold the cube shape together.

You can choose from one of the three templates that we provide.

The PDF file will come with all 6 dice in one file. So I suggest when printing, select the actual page number of the one you want and just print that one out.

It'll save you paper and ink.

Then cut the template out around the solid lines. Don't cut through the dotted areas.

You'll end up with a shape like this.

paper dice template cut out

The fold the tabs on the dotted lines one a flat surface to make sure you create a nice sharp fold.

Then start folding the shape up to make a cube. Here's a step by step video to assemble the paper dice from Just the Art Teacher.

For more durable paper dice, I recommend using cardstock to print out your templates. This will make for a sturdier cube shape and they will last much longer.

How do you make paper dice?

Making paper dice is pretty easy. You need to make paper dice sheets containing dice squares and fill the blank squares with dots or words or anything you want to apply with the dice. First you need to make a fold and flip the shape over so the decorated side is facing away from you. On paper dice sheets, there are 6 blank squares, in a similar shape like a cross. Make sure you have 4 squares vertically and 2 more squares on the side from the center of cross shapes. Now you can bend up the two added squares glued against other tabs or squares. Then after you can have a shape of paper cube or your own personalized paper dice.

What can you teach using a paper dice?

Dice game is pretty much a simple game to do in the classroom. You only need a handful of dice, pencils and paper. It is commonly used as math games but it is also possible to make a variation of games for each subject using dice for teaching. In English subjects, you can give students or your kids sheets of Roll & Retell. Each dice rolled lets children tell different topics from the stories you have read to them. Do make questions like what is the story about, where does the story take place or how about the character in the story. Another game you can use with paper dice is to Roll and Write a Story. We often find that kids have difficulties in choosing a setting or character or a plot of a story they have to write. This can solve the problem. There you don’t have to be stuck in thinking that learning with paper dice can only be done on math sheets.

What effective game to do with paper dice for preschoolers?

Doing educational games with preschoolers need to be simple yet active so they can understand easily. A proper game using paper dice for that is more educative and suitable for them recommended to start games if they understand dot patterns and they didn’t change. This also helps preschoolers on counting because in a way they always tend to count each dot everytime it rolls. Then you can write numbers 1-6 on pieces of paper and taped to the wall. There goes for each paper dice roll, according to how many dots shown, guiding them where the numbers and totals of dots are the same. It is up to your preference whether to make it an active run activity or they can shout each number attached on the wall. This is the simplest way and effective activity for preschoolers.

A few general ideas on how to use these dice to get you started:

- You can mix a text die with punctuation like '.' '?' 'not' and an image die. Have students make a sentence, negative statement or question with the word that comes up on the image die.

- Make text dice with phonics digraphs, reading rules, and combinations. Have the students roll the dice and give them 2 minutes to write as many words as they can that contain those phonics rules.

- Make dice with numbers and different operators ( + , - , x ) or just use regular dice plus the operator dice for simple math practice.

- Make text dice with set questions or better yet, just the beginning, 'Have you ever ...?' / 'Do you have ...?' / 'Are you going to ...?' and use these as conversation starters and warm up activities.

- Combine the text dice with the printable board games in examples like those above. So instead of using two dice, you would use the content from the dice and content from the board position to practice your target language.

Here's a list of communication games you can play using dice . These can be used for conversational activities or they can be used with the Crisscross Bingo game from MES-English.

The art of paper folding: your guide to this fun and easy craft

Have you tried paper folding? It’s a simple craft which harnesses the power of paper to make fun creations, like animals, games and even jewellery!

paper folding

Paper folding is often referred to as origami. Origami is the well-known Japanese paper folding technique whereby you create beautiful three-dimensional designs by folding the paper (no cutting or glue is used).

For the purpose of this article though, we are encompassing all types of paper folding and won’t omit projects where you might need to use scissors or glue. We’ll guide you through the art of paper folding, what type of paper to use, and inspiration and tips for taking on your new paper folding project.

There is a multitude of projects to choose from when it comes to paper folding, you can make the humble crane , or you can pick a more interactive paper folding such as the fortune teller . Paper folding is a great craft for kids as well as adults; it encourages them to use their imagination by making something special from a plain sheet of paper.

Another great aspect of paper folding is the abundance of origami paper to choose from, you can simply go for plain and let your folding do the talking, or you can opt for coloured, patterned and even metallic papers to add a bit of sparkle!

What is paper folding art?

The art of paper folding is what it says on the tin! You take sheets of paper and fold them in certain ways to create three-dimensional objects, models or games. It can benefit your mind by giving you a challenge and encouraging you to take screen breaks.

More like this

There are a variety of skill levels when it comes to paper folding, from the basic folds of an origami cat to the complex folds of an origami dragon . If you are new to paper folding, it’s best to start with a simple project, to master the folding techniques. The more you practise, the more accurate your folds will become.

Paper folding isn't just for adults either, you can find plenty of easy origami ideas for kids . With a basic project, kids can enjoy the whole process from start to finish, which will hold their focus and motivate them to do more.

What paper for paper folding?

Part of the joy of paper folding is choosing beautiful origami paper to use in your creations. If you’ve ever dabbled in origami, you’ll know there is a whole plethora of paper out there; shiny, metallic, colourful, and even galaxy-themed!

When choosing a paper, it’s best to consider the type of project you want to try. If you’re making an animal, for example, you could opt for an animal-print paper to give it that extra flair. Whereas, if you are making a fortune teller , you will need to pick plain paper so that you are able to see your writing on it.

Origami paper is a special type of thin paper which is usually in a perfect square, this makes it easy to fold and the ideal starting point for most projects. We’ve rounded up our favourite origami papers and where to buy them if you are in need of some guidance!

The crane is usually the first project that comes to mind when we think of origami! It’s a very traditional paper folding inspiration.

Historically, it was believed that if you folded a thousand origami cranes, your wish would come true. This is why cranes may have become such a strong symbol of origami over the years. If you want to read more about paper cranes you can find more info and a beautiful story over at Family Peace Centre .

We’d recommend mastering the origami crane before moving on to this project, that way you can work your way up and not feel too overwhelmed.

The 5 Best Sticker Papers For Cricut Machines

Long-lasting options in tons of finishes, colors, and opacities.

The 5 Best Sticker Papers For Cricut Machines

It’s a highly debated topic among crafters who use Cricut’s Print Then Cut function to make their own stickers. But choosing the best sticker paper for Cricut machines to suit you will come down to what type of stickers you’re looking to make. First, decide which paper finish and level of durability best meet your needs, and then double-check that the paper is compatible with your printer.

How To Choose Your Cricut Sticker Paper

Durability : Long-lasting sticker paper tends to be more expensive, but it’s worth the splurge for certain projects. For example, if your sticker is meant for a reusable water bottle, food container, mug, or soap dispenser, opt for a material that’s water- and tear-resistant. For single-use address labels, paper projects, or temporary stickers, though, you might want to consider a cheaper alternative.

Paper finish : Sticker paper comes in lots of finishes, including matte, glossy, transparent, and even holographic . It doesn’t just affect the overall look of your sticker — it’ll also affect its longevity. However, while glossy paper tends to be more water-resistant, it can also be more difficult for the Cricut to detect the image’s boundaries while cutting; light can reflect off of the paper, confusing the machine’s sensors. Luckily, reviewers have found some workarounds, like applying matte Scotch tape over the boundary lines or re-drawing them with a matte marker.

Printer compatibility : Assuming you’re making print-and-cut stickers, you’ll need the paper to be compatible with your printer. (For printer-free stickers made out of single-color vinyl sheets or cardstock, scroll to the bottom of this article.) All of the following papers work with most inkjet printers — what most people have in their hopes, especially when they use their printer for crafting . If you have a laser printer, though, be sure that your paper of choice is compatible because only some are. Always check the size of the sheets, too. Most of the options below measure 8.5 by 11 inches, which is the most commonly accepted paper size for printers.

Shop The Best Cricut Printable Sticker Paper

1. The Overall Best Sticker Paper For Cricut

JOYEZA Premium Printable Matte Vinyl Sticker Paper, 25 Sheets

Why It’s Great : With an overall 4.6-star rating from over 14,000 reviewers, these premium printable vinyl sheets are difficult to ignore. They have a matte finish that holds ink well and dries fast, but they still resist tearing and moisture damage better than most other matte papers. They’re also surprisingly long-lasting thanks to their easy-peel, adhesive backing, and they’re designed to work with both inkjet and laser printers. Finally, this brand offers a lifetime guarantee if you run into any issues.

For Best Results : Don't use these stickers outside or in direct sunlight. For improved durability, reviewers recommend a clear laminate layer or spray overtop.

One Reviewer Wrote : “I’ve been using Cricut printable vinyl for some time now for my sticker business, but I had a large order to complete and limited funds so I decided to give this brand a try. [...] You get twice as much product for roughly the same price as Cricut but it does not disappoint!”

Best For: Inkjet and laser printers | Finish: Matte | Water-Resistant : Yes | Size : 8.5 by 11 inches | Approximate Price Per Sheet : $0.52

2. The Best Budget Pick For Basic Stickers

TownStix Printable White Sticker Paper, 30 Sheets

Why It’s Great : There’s no point breaking the bank on temporary stickers, address labels, scrapbooking, and kids’ crafts. For a basic option that works well and costs less than 25 cents a sheet, you can’t beat this printable sticker paper . Its matte, self-adhesive design isn’t water-resistant, but it is smudge-resistant and sticky enough to adhere to most surfaces with ease. Best of all, it works well with almost any printer, inkjet and laser printers alike.

For Best Results : Use a light paper-cutting setting on your Cricut to avoid cutting through the backing. Opt for a less-sticky mat to prevent any rips while peeling.

One Reviewer Wrote : “I bought this to try it out for craft labels. LOVE this product! The paper moves smoothly through my printer. The images come out vivid. The sticker paper cuts great with my Cricut.”

Best For: Inkjet and laser printers | Finish: Matte | Water-Resistant : No | Size : 8.5 by 11 inches | Approximate Price Per Sheet : $0.23

3. The Best Clear Sticker Paper

Neato Clear Vinyl Sticker Paper, 10 Sheets

Why It’s Great : For jars, candles, food containers, and other vessels that would benefit from a durable, transparent sticker, opt for this clear printable vinyl paper . Not only is it glossy and much more transparent than many competing brands (many of which have a colored hue), but it’s also tear-resistant and waterproof with certain ink types. Each order also includes the brand’s online design software, and the paper is compatible with most printers.

For Best Results : Let the ink dry for 24 hours before cutting or sticking. For outdoor/fully waterproof stickers, use UV ink and seal with a UV-resistant spray.

One Reviewer Wrote : “I’ve been doing print orders for a local shop I work with, and they wanted custom labels made for their juice bottles. They wanted the labels to be clear, and waterproof, and these labels were PERFECT! Just what I was looking for, good quality. They also print and dry super well, and cuts well with my Cricut.”

Best For: Inkjet and laser printers | Finish: Glossy | Water-Resistant : Yes | Size : 8.5 by 11 inches | Approximate Price Per Sheet : $1.40

4. The Best Glossy Sticker Paper

WeLiu Glossy Vinyl Sticker Paper, 21 Sheets

Why It’s Great : For a glossy finish that looks like a store-bought sticker (and lasts just as long), this glossy sticker paper is a great option. It’s durable, water-resistant, and sticks to most surfaces. Plus, it dries quickly and holds ink well. While many reviewers say it’s Cricut-friendly, others find that the reflective finish confuses the machine. If you find that to be the case, a roll of matte Scotch tape should do the trick: Just apply the tape over the sensor lines and your Cricut should be able to detect them. Unfortunately, this paper isn’t the best option for laser printers.

For Best Results : Choose the best-quality printing setting possible. Let the ink dry for three days before allowing it to come into contact with water. If your Cricut can’t detect the sensor lines, put strips of matte tape over them.

One Reviewer Wrote : “I stuck one of the stickers to a jar lid and submerged it in water for 2 hours. I pulled it out and the sticker was in perfect shape. Not only that, but I was able to remove it from the jar lid and re-stick it to a different lid and no one can tell which is the sticker that was submerged! It's incredible. I'm so impressed.”

Best For: Inkjet printers | Finish: Glossy | Water-Resistant : Yes | Size : 8.5 by 11 inches | Approximate Price Per Sheet : $0.43

5. The Best Holographic Sticker Paper

UOKHO Printable Holographic Sticker Paper, 20 Sheets

Why It’s Great : For homemade stickers with cool, eye-catching flair, this printable holographic sticker paper is worth the splurge. The self-adhesive vinyl has a shimmery, rainbow finish that’s fast-drying, tear-resistant, fade-resistant, and waterproof. The brand also offers a range of different holographic patterns, like diamonds, stars, transparent, or a combination. One thing to keep in mind is this thick, shimmery paper is a bit temperamental with cutting machines. The brand recommends re-drawing the border with a matte marker, turning off the light, or using white paper for your detection border so the Cricut can sense it.

For Best Results : For inkjet printers, use dye ink. For laser printers, set the printing mode to label. Turn off the light before cutting. Use white paper for your detection border or re-draw it with a matte marker. When cutting, set your Cricut to the Shimmer Vinyl Custom setting with high blade pressure.

One Reviewer Wrote : “I used this to make custom stickers on my Cricut Explore 2. They turned out so great! I used the vinyl shimmer setting, more blade pressure and ran it through the cut, without removing it between cuts, 3 times. The paper is thick which makes the stickers so durable and nice. I highly recommend!”

Best For: Laser and inkjet printers | Finish: Holographic | Water-Resistant : Yes | Size : 8.5 by 11 inches | Approximate Price Per Sheet : $0.45

Also Great: The Best Sticker Cardstock

Cricut Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock, 10 Sheets

Why It’s Great : These Cricut sticker cardstock sheets aren’t designed to be used alongside a printer. That said, they allow you to easily cut out colorful shapes for scrapbooking, school projects, and card-making — and then stick them on without the need for messy glue. Each package comes with 10 sheets in five different colors, and they work without a cutting mat for the Cricut Explore 3 and Cricut Maker 3 . In addition to the pastel set, the listing also has cardstock in black, white, and more saturated colors.

For Best Results : Use without a mat and alongside a compatible Cricut machine (Cricut Explore 3 and Cricut Maker 3). Be gentle — it may rip easily.

One Reviewer Wrote : “Loved the card stock sticker paper. Used it for my Valentine’s Day flower boxes. I found using the vinyl wasn’t going to work, so I used this card stock and worked perfect.”

Best For: Use without a printer | Finish: Cardstock | Water-Resistant : No | Size : 12 by 12 inches | Approximate Price Per Sheet : $1

Also Great: A Value-Pack Of Vinyl Sheets

ORACAL Glossy Vinyl Pack, 24 Sheets

Why It’s Great : If you’re looking to make single-color vinyl stickers (or layer multiple colors for a printer-free alternative), these glossy vinyl sheets are widely considered one of the best options out there. This set includes 24 sheets of the brand’s most popular colors. Reviewers have used them to make car decals, water bottle stickers, key chains, signs, labels, and more. Despite the set’s reasonable price tag, the vinyl is still shockingly high quality. It’s thick, glossy, thermal-print compatible, and designed to last at least four years outdoors — plus reviewers report that they actually prefer it over the Cricut-brand vinyl because it’s easier to cut and weed (removing the negative space in a design).

For Best Results : Thoroughly clean your surface before applying your vinyl sticker. Let your item sit for 24 hours before using it.

One Reviewer Wrote : “My new go-to when I need to replenish my vinyl stock. Was exactly as described. I love the variety of colors for the price. My favorite vinyl for car stickers. Came perfectly packaged so nothing was damaged. Very happy with my purchase.”

Best For: Use without a printer | Finish: Glossy | Water-Resistant : Yes | Size : 12 by 12 inches | Approximate Price Per Sheet : $0.75
